Go Hard, Go Home: Short, Rigorous, Effective Workouts

BikePushCan you really get fit when you spend less time working out than brushing your teeth? Not quite, but close?

Short workouts featuring several bursts of all-out, gut-busting cardio have long been popular. Some (like me) use the strategy for warming up. Others simply use it for their entire workout.

It is effective–more effective (in my view) that a longer cardio workout in which you simply get into a groove without really pushing your heart rate near its maximum, where it burns the most calories.

The author of a recent article in The New York Times points out that researchers recently discovered that if done correctly, short workouts can be extremely effective.

…if you wish to perform high-intensity interval training, to stick to what is well documented as effective: a few sessions per week of 30- or 60-second intervals so strenuous you moan, followed by a minute or so of blessed recovery, and a painful repetition or four. Done correctly, such sessions, in my experience, get you out of the gym quickly and inspire truly inventive cursing….

So go fast, go hard and go home!
